Actually he hadn’t, but he’d had a damn good try.

I should have known it—the uniform should have given me a clue—Poole was on duty. He’d been on duty since mid-morning, and the spell in the Interview Room had merely meant that the Easedale coppers had known exactly where to get at him.

In fairness, Poole had moved into action with surprising swiftness. Maybe he’d been very glad to remove his backside from the inquisitorial chair.

He’d murmured, “Excuse me, sir,” as he’d hurried from the room, and I’d been left there, holding a cup of coffee and still munching biscuit.

I had shown great presence of mind—an amazing degree of self-control—and instead of bawling somebody out, I’d sipped coffee, looked at Moody and murmured, “Policing! It gets more like a French farce by the day.”

“Sir?” Moody had still been flabbergasted.

“People,” I’d explained. “Doors. Various members of the cast dashing in, dashing out, generally making idiots of themselves. Any minute now, some hairy-arsed constable will open the door and stagger in with his trousers round his ankles.”
